Can not Merge Partitions

Can not Merge Partitions

This article applies to: all versions of Qiling Disk Master.

Introduction:

The "merge partition" option may be grayed out or the partition you want to select may be grayed when trying to merge two partitions. This can occur due to various reasons such as disk space constraints, file system limitations, or other system-related issues.

Generally, there are following situations which lead to the problem:

To merge two partitions on different disks, you can use the `resize2fs` command in Linux. Here's how you can do it:

Case 2: The partition is a system partition:

In this scenario, the partition doesn’t have enough free space, which is less than 30GB, making it difficult to install a new operating system or even run the current one smoothly. This situation can be caused by a variety of factors, such as low disk space, a large number of installed programs, or even a full disk with no available space.

In this case, the two partitions (E and F) are adjacent, meaning they share a common edge. This adjacency relationship can be utilized to simplify the partitioning process, as the partitions can be combined into a single partition, reducing the total number of partitions.

Solutions:

If it's case 1, you can't merge two partitions on different disks. Consider creating a large partition on a third disk and copying data to it instead.

In case 2, our software does not support merging the System reserved partition because it contains files essential for booting the system.

If it's case 3, the host partition needs at least 1GB of free space. You can clear up space by deleting unnecessary files or shrink the second partition to create unallocated space, then use the "resize partition" tool to add that space to the host partition.
If it's case 4, Qiling Disk Master can't merge non-adjacent partitions. If there's enough free space on the host partition to save data from the second partition, you can manually copy data from the second partition to the host partition, delete the second partition, and then merge the host partition with the newly freed space.
