Primary Partition, Logical Partition and Extended Partition

About Partition

A disk partition is a defined storage space on a hard drive, allowing users to divide a single physical disk into multiple smaller logical partitions. Windows operating systems can create primary, extended, and logical partitions, enabling users to organize their data more effectively. This arrangement is beneficial as it allows users to separate their OS and data, so if a problem occurs with the OS, it can be reinstalled without affecting the data partition, keeping user files and data safe.

Some users may split a hard disk into multiple partitions to take advantage of smaller cluster sizes, which can be beneficial for storing a large number of small files. This is because smaller partitions can have smaller cluster sizes, meaning files can be stored more efficiently, but too small clusters can generate many disk fragments during data read-write process. Therefore, it's essential to choose a proper cluster size according to your specific condition.

You can create, delete, and format partitions using the diskpart.exe command or graphical tools like Partition Assistant, which can also resize and move partitions to optimize disk space.

By Microsoft:

• A partition is a separate section of a computer's hard disk that functions like a standalone disk. Each partition is formatted independently and shares the computer's memory and storage space, allowing multiple operating systems to be installed on the same machine.

• A volume is a storage area on a hard disk that is formatted with a file system and has a drive letter assigned to it, allowing a single hard disk to have multiple volumes or a single volume to span multiple hard disks.

Tip: In computing, "partition" and "volume" are often used interchangeably to describe a section of a hard drive, as they serve similar functions. However, there is a key difference: "partition" refers to a basic disk, whereas "volume" refers to a dynamic disk, and Windows operating systems (11/10/8/7) cannot be installed on dynamic volumes.

Primary Partition and Active Partition:

A primary partition is a section of a hard disk where an operating system can be installed, with a maximum of 4 allowed per MBR hard disk. One of these partitions can be designated as active, containing the boot loader to load the operating system. This allows for multiple operating systems to be installed on a single disk.

Tips:

Extended Partition and Logical Partition:

The primary partition limit of 4 can be bypassed by using an extended partition, which can hold unlimited logical drives. These logical partitions can store data like primary partitions, but the extended partition itself cannot store data, as it is used to hold logical partitions, and only one extended partition can exist on a single disk.

The Rules of Partitioning a Hard Drive

A hard disk drive must be partitioned before you can use it. There are some rules as follows:

◤ The MBR hard disk can only have a maximum of four primary partitions, which is a limitation due to the way the master boot record is structured when one primary partition is applied to the system.

◤ A primary partition can be designated as the active partition, and this active partition is used to boot the system.

◤ The BIOS will only load the operating system from the active partition, and other partitions will not be recognized.

◤ To overcome the limit of at most 4 primary partitions, you can create 3 or fewer primary partitions and one extended partition, which can contain multiple logical partitions. This setup allows for more flexibility in partitioning your hard drive.

What is Partition Table?

The Partition Table is a crucial storage space that records essential information about primary, extended, and logical partitions. It permanently reflects any changes made to the partitions, such as creating, deleting, or resizing them. This table is vital, as a corrupted or crashed Partition Table can result in the loss of partitions, making it extremely important for maintaining the integrity of your storage space.
