Cannot Convert Partition Between Primary and Logical

Sometimes when you want to convert a partition to primary or logical, you may find out that the convert option is greyed out because the partition is already the correct type for the disk, or the disk is already set to the correct type for the partition. In other words, if the disk is set to be a primary disk, you can't convert a partition to be a logical partition, and vice versa. This is a safety feature to prevent accidental changes to the disk configuration.

The following are cases where this may occur.

The partition is labelled "system" and cannot be converted to a logical partition.

The partition on a GPT disk cannot be converted to a logical partition because GPT disks only support primary partitions.

In a Master Boot Record (MBR) partition style setup, which is the traditional partitioning scheme for hard drives, there are limitations on the number of primary partitions that can be created. Specifically, only 4 primary partitions or 3 primary partitions plus 1 extended partition, which can contain multiple logical partitions, are supported. If a disk already has 3 primary partitions and some logical partitions, it cannot be converted to use a primary partition, as this would exceed the allowed number of primary partitions.
