Error 0x8007045D indicates that an input/output request could not be completed. It can interrupt a file copy, a backup, or Windows installation. The error alone does not tell you whether the source, destination, cable, or media is responsible.
First note the operation and any named file. Formatting the destination immediately can destroy useful data while leaving a source-side fault untouched.
Safely eject an external disk, reconnect it directly to a reliable port, and replace a suspect cable with a known-good one. For powered enclosures, check the correct power adapter. A second computer can help isolate the host, but do not accept an unexpected format prompt.
If hardware tests are stable and the failure began after software changes, use Windows 10 Advanced startup to enter Startup Settings > Safe Mode and repeat a small non-destructive copy. A successful Safe Mode test suggests a driver or background-software interaction; it does not prove the disk is healthy.
Record any antivirus or backup-software alerts and use vendor troubleshooting. Avoid disabling all security protections as a blanket solution.
For a stable readable volume, Qiling Disk Master can back up selected folders to a different healthy disk. Do not save the backup onto the disk currently producing write errors.
Step 1. Attach the healthy destination and choose File backup under Backup and Recovery.
Step 2. Select important folders in the tree control. Start with essential data rather than assuming every unreadable file will be included successfully.
Step 3. Choose the healthy backup destination, review the paths, and click Proceed. Check the result for errors and test restoring sample files.
If the backup also fails, preserve its error details. A backup application cannot repair a physical connection or guarantee reads from damaged media.
After protecting files, inspect a stable NTFS volume with chkdsk E: /scan from an administrator Command Prompt, replacing E: with the confirmed affected volume. If repairs are requested, close applications and schedule an appropriate repair window. Do not run repeated full surface scans on a deteriorating disk.
Reformatting is a last reuse step after recovery and hardware checks, not a way to retrieve files. Finish by repeating the original operation and opening copied or restored files. Replace hardware when errors recur across known-good connections.
