Many programs install to C drive by default. Over time, installers, games, caches, and program data can make C drive full even when another disk has plenty of space.

Understand the problem

You can change Microsoft Store app locations and choose custom paths for many desktop programs. System components, drivers, and shared runtimes should usually remain on C drive.

Use Windows built-in tools

Use Windows storage settings and custom installers to control future installation locations.

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings.
  2. Change where new apps or content are saved when Windows provides the option.
  3. When installing desktop programs, choose Custom installation and browse to another drive.
  4. Move game libraries through Steam, Epic, or the launcher that owns the library.
  5. Clean old installers and caches only after confirming programs still work.
