How to Extend System Partition Without Formatting

The system partition can run low on space after updates, applications, and temporary files accumulate. Extending it requires usable unallocated space.

Background and causes

Disk Management can extend C drive only when unallocated space is directly to its right. Otherwise, another partition must be moved or resized.

• Confirm the exact disk, partition, drive letter, file system, and capacity before changing anything.
• Recover or back up important files before formatting, deleting, converting, or recreating partitions.
• For boot-related changes, check BIOS/UEFI mode and boot order before editing disk layout.

Use Windows built-in tools

Open Disk Management and check whether unallocated space is directly after C drive. If it is, right-click C drive and choose Extend Volume. If the unallocated space is separated by another partition, Disk Management cannot move that partition, so use a partition tool with preview.

Function 1. Extend C drive when adjacent unallocated space exists

Use this function when unallocated space is immediately next to the system partition. This is the simplest and safest layout for extending C drive.

Step 1. Open Qiling Disk Master and select the system partition that you want to extend, usually C drive. Then click Resize/Move.

Step 2. In the resize window, drag the border of C drive toward the adjacent unallocated space, or enter a larger partition size manually.

Step 3. Review the pending operation. If the target partition and new size are correct, click Proceed to extend the system partition.

Function 2. Move space next to C drive before extending

Use this function when unallocated space exists on the same disk but another partition sits between the unallocated space and C drive.

Step 1. Select the partition between C drive and the unallocated space, then click Resize/Move.

Step 2. Move the partition to the right or shrink it so the unallocated space becomes adjacent to C drive. Then extend C drive into that space.

Step 3. Review all pending operations together. If the move and extension order is correct, click Proceed and keep the computer powered on until the task finishes.

Check the result

Confirm C drive size increased and Windows Update has enough free space.
