How to Use Unallocated Space Before C Drive

Unallocated space before C drive cannot always be added with Disk Management because Windows extends a partition only into adjacent space on its right.

If free space sits before C drive, you may need to move C drive or create a separate partition instead of using Extend Volume.

Function 1. Move C drive so the unallocated space can be used

Use this function when the unallocated space is on the left side of C drive and you want to add it to C drive.

Step 1. Select C drive and click Resize/Move.

Step 2. Move C drive toward the unallocated space, then extend C drive into that space.

Step 3. Review the pending operations. If the disk layout is correct, click Proceed.

Function 2. Create a separate partition instead

Use this function if you do not want to move the system partition. This keeps C drive unchanged and turns the unallocated space into a new volume.

Step 1. Select the unallocated space before C drive and click Create.

Step 2. Set the file system, volume label, drive letter, and partition size.

Step 3. Click Proceed to create and format the new partition.

Check the result

After moving or extending, confirm Windows boots and recovery partitions still exist.
