Split Partition in Windows 7 Without Losing Data

Splitting a partition means shrinking an existing volume and using the released unallocated space to create a new partition. It helps separate Windows, programs, and personal files.

Understand the problem

Windows 7 Disk Management can split a partition when enough movable free space exists. If Windows cannot shrink enough space, immovable files or disk errors may be blocking the operation.

• Confirm the exact disk, partition, drive letter, file system, and capacity before changing anything.
• Back up or recover important files before formatting, deleting, converting, resizing, or recreating partitions.
• For boot-related changes, check BIOS or UEFI mode, boot order, and system partition status before editing disk layout.

Use Windows built-in tools

Use Disk Management for a simple split when free space is available.

1. Open Disk Management and right-click the partition you want to split.
2. Choose Shrink Volume and wait for Windows to query available shrink space.
3. Enter the amount of space to shrink, leaving enough free space in the original partition.
4. Right-click the new unallocated space and choose New Simple Volume.
5. Assign a drive letter, format the new partition, and name it clearly.

Step 1. Back up important files from the Windows 7 partition. Close running programs, pause large file transfers, and make sure the computer has stable power.

Step 2. Open Qiling Disk Master. In the disk map, select the Windows 7 partition by drive letter, capacity, and position, then click Resize/Move.

Step 3. Drag the partition border or enter the new size to create unallocated space for a new partition. If unallocated space is on the wrong side, move the neighboring partition first so the final layout is correct.

Step 4. Review the pending operations in the disk map. Confirm that only the intended partition will be changed.

Step 5. Click Proceed to apply the changes. Do not interrupt the process while the partition is being moved or resized.

Step 6. When the task finishes, reopen Disk Management and File Explorer. Confirm the final capacity, drive letter, and file access.

Check the result

Confirm both partitions appear in File Explorer. Copy a small file to the new partition and open files from the original partition.
