Many users want to create a system image to an external HDD to keep their data safe. This process involves creating a snapshot of the entire system, including the operating system, programs, and files, and saving it to an external hard drive. This can be an effective way to back up important data and ensure that it can be restored in case of a system failure or other disaster.
✩ Avoid data loss and reinstallation: System failures can be caused by various issues, including system crashes, virus attacks, laptop theft, or hard drive damage. When your system fails, reinstalling it can be a time-consuming process, causing frustration and inconvenience.
✩ Fast disaster recovery: If you've previously created a system image on an external hard drive, restoring it is a straightforward process that can save you a significant amount of time and effort.
✩ Cost-effective: While it's true that HDDs are generally cheaper than SSDs, the fact that they're slower and more prone to physical damage makes them a less reliable choice for storing system backup images. HDDs are better suited for storing large amounts of data, such as media files or archives, where speed and reliability aren't as critical.
Here I will show you two ways of creating system image to an external HDD. First, you need to prepare an external HDD, which is big enough to store your system files. You may choose WD HDD, Seagate HDD, Hitachi HDD, Samsung HDD, or Toshiba HDD as you like.
Windows built-In Windows 10, you can use the built-in Backup and Restore tool to create a system image backup. To do this, go to Settings, then Update & Security, and click on Backup. Select the drive you want to back up, choose the backup type as "Back up to an external drive", and then select the backup location. You can also choose to back up your system files and settings, and to include any connected external devices. Once you've selected your options, click on "Backup options" to confirm your settings.
Step 1. Connect your external hard drive to your computer and ensure it can be detected. Open the Backup and Restore program by going to Start -> Control Panel -> System and Security -> Backup and Restore (Windows 7), then click on Create a system image at the left side.
Step 2. To store the image backup, select the prepared external HDD as the destination place and click Next.
Step 3. Select the drive(s) you want to back up, with the system drive selected by default, and then click Next.
Step 4. Confirm your backup information, then click Proceed to launch the progress, if there is no problem.
To create a system image to an external hard drive using Windows built-in backup tool, you can follow these steps: Open Control Panel, click on System and Security, then click on Backup and Restore (Windows Backup). Click on Create a system image, select the external hard drive as the destination, and click on Next. Select the drive where you want to save the system image, and click on Save changes.
There are many utilities to make up for the shortages of Windows built-in tool, such as Qiling Disk Master Standard, a powerful backup software that can backup and restore system in a few simple steps, and it's free for Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10/11.
To create a system image to an external HDD, go to Control Panel > System and Security > Backup and Restore (Windows 7) or Control Panel > System and Security > Backup and Restore (Windows 8/10), click on "Create a system image", select the external HDD as the destination, choose the drive you want to include, and confirm the settings. The system image will be created and saved to the external HDD.
Step 1. Download Qiling Disk Master Standard, install and launch it, then click on Backup and select System Backup from the main interface.
Step 2. The System Backup page will appear, with the system drive already selected. Simply choose the prepared external hard drive as the destination for the backup.
Step 3. To create a system backup image on your Windows 10 computer, start by clicking on the "Create a system image" option in the Control Panel. Then, select the external hard drive where you want to save the backup image. You can also add comments to the backup image for future reference. If you want to set up an automatic backup, use the Schedule option.
A Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is a data storage device that uses one or more rapidly spinning platters coated with magnetic material to store and retrieve data. When data is written or read, the HDD spins and a moving actuator arm accesses the information.
An external hard drive is used for extra storage or backup, and has a USB port. You plug it into your computer and it's recognized.
Creating a system image to an external HDD is relatively easy with a reliable backup software like Backup and Restore (Windows 7) or Qiling Disk Master Standard. However, the built-in tool can be unstable, leading to backup failures due to issues like insufficient space or VSS errors. For a more secure data backup, it's recommended to use Qiling Disk Master instead.
By upgrading to a higher edition of Qiling Disk Master, you can enjoy advanced features such as scheduling backups, incremental backups, compression, and intelligent sector backups. Additionally, you can use it to restore a system image, and with higher editions, you can even restore a system image to another PC. This tool allows you to secure your data by using it to backup and restore your system.
