Reallocate Space from One Partition to Another on Server

Windows Server partitions often become unbalanced: C drive runs out of space while another volume still has plenty. Reallocating space is safer when you understand the disk layout first.

Understand the problem

Disk Management can extend a partition only into adjacent unallocated space. If the free space is on another partition or the wrong side, use a tool that can resize or move partitions with a preview.

• Confirm the target disk, partition, drive letter, file system, and capacity before changing anything.
• Back up or recover important files before formatting, deleting, resizing, converting, or reinstalling Windows.
• For boot-related repairs, check BIOS or UEFI mode, boot order, and disk style before editing system partitions.

Use Windows built-in tools

Use built-in tools when the layout is simple.

1. Back up important server data.
2. Open Disk Management and locate the partition with free space.
3. Shrink that partition to create unallocated space.
4. If the unallocated space is directly after the target partition, use Extend Volume.
5. If it is not adjacent, do not delete production data to force the layout.

Step 1. Open Qiling Disk Master and check the disk map. Identify the Server partition that needs more space by drive letter, capacity, and position before changing anything.

Step 2. Select the partition that needs adjustment and click Resize/Move. If unallocated space is separated by another partition, move that partition first.

Step 3. Drag the border or enter the new size to reallocate free space from another partition. Keep enough free space for Windows, temporary files, and future updates.

Step 4. Review the pending operations. Confirm that only the intended partition will be moved or resized.

Step 5. Click Proceed to apply the operation. Keep the computer powered on until the task completes.

Check the result

After resizing, confirm the capacity of both partitions. Restart important services and check Event Viewer for storage-related errors.
