Clear Windows 11 Update Cache Safely

Clearing the Windows 11 update cache can fix stuck downloads, repeated update failures, or corrupted update files, but it should be done carefully.

Understand the problem

The SoftwareDistribution folder stores downloaded update files. Clearing it does not remove personal files, but a backup is still wise before system repair.

• Confirm the disk, partition, file system, Windows version, boot mode, or update state before making changes.
• Back up or recover important files before conversion, deletion, formatting, cleanup, reimage, or boot repair.
• For boot-related work, check BIOS or UEFI mode, boot order, system partition status, and recovery media first.

Use Windows built-in tools

Reset update cache with administrator rights.

1. Pause or stop Windows Update and BITS services.
2. Rename or clear the SoftwareDistribution download cache.
3. Restart Windows Update and BITS services.
4. Run Windows Update again and let it rebuild the cache.
5. Restart the PC after updates install.
