What Is A Recovery Partition?

A recovery partition, also known as a system repair disk, is a section of a drive that stores a system image, allowing you to restore your computer to its factory settings if it can't boot. It takes up space, but keeping it ensures you can recover Windows and installed software if you delete it. If you remove it, you'll need to reinstall everything.

When installing Windows 7/8/10/11, Windows creates a smaller recovery partition, which is much smaller than the factory recovery partition. The size of this partition varies by Windows version, with Windows 7 taking up 200 MB, Windows 8 taking up 350 MB, and Windows 10 taking up 450 MB.

When Do You Need to Restore Windows from Recovery Partition?

Our Windows may fail due to external factors like viruses or hacking, or internal issues like immediate system failure. When this happens, it's essential to repair the system to get it working properly again. Creating a system repair disk or recovery partition can be a lifesaver, as it provides a backup plan in case of a Windows failure, allowing you to recover and restore the system to its previous state.

We can utilize system restore points to prevent the need for a full system reinstall, allowing our computer to function properly without requiring a complete overhaul. This can be especially helpful when we don't want to reinstall everything.
