Adjust Partition Size with Free Partition Software

When adjust partition size?

Adjusting partition size typically involves extending or shrinking a partition, which is usually necessary when a user needs to change the size of a partition. This is commonly required under two main conditions: when the existing partition is too small and needs to be enlarged, or when it is too large and needs to be reduced in size.

In Windows Disk Management, you can use the "Extend Volume" or "Shrink Volume Wizard" to adjust partition size, as shown in the screenshots.

Note: To extend a partition via Disk Management, there should be a contiguous unallocated space behind the partition that you want to extend.

In many cases, there is no adjacent unallocated space behind the partition that you want to extend, making it impossible to get such a space through shrinking a partition. As a result, after shrinking a partition behind the C drive, the unallocated space is created behind the shrunk partition, not behind the C drive, making the Extend Volume option greyed out.

Extend partition by adding non-contiguous unallocated space.

Take extending C drive in Windows 7 as an example.

If there's no unallocated space, you can try shrinking one partition to free up some space. This can help you create a partition for your new installation.

Shrink partition with unmovable files

Step 1. Right click the partition that you want to shrink and choose Resize/Move Partition.
